Surgical orthodontics

Surgical orthodontics, also known as orthognathic surgery, is a type of orthodontic treatment done to correct severe cases. From improper bites to aesthetic concerns, this treatment is done on adults and teens whose issues cannot be covered by orthodontic treatment alone.

When would orthodontic surgery be needed?

Severe cases referred for orthodontic surgery can include bad bites, jaw bone abnormalities, and malocclusions. We will recommend surgical intervention if we believe the issue can’t be resolved with braces or other orthodontic solutions - and a patient is only referred for oral surgery after a thorough evaluation.

Is surgery right for all ages?

Orthognathic surgeries may involve treating complex craniofacial cases involving the mouth, jaw, face, and skull. To receive jaw surgery, the patient’s jaw must still be growing. Generally, the best age would be before age 16 for females and 18 for males.

How does orthognathic surgery work?

Here are some steps we’ve outlined to give you a better idea of a patient’s journey with orthognathic surgery:

  • An oral and maxillofacial surgeon will perform your orthognathic surgery and it will take place in a hospital. The procedure itself will last several hours, depending on the case.
  • Once the surgery is finished, you will be recommended to rest for a two-week period. Since orthognathic surgery is a major treatment, it would be best to schedule some time away from work or school during the healing process.
  • After your jaw has healed, your Orthodontist will once again fine-tune your bite.
  • Once you have healed completely, we will create a customized braces treatment plan for you. Most braces are removed within six to twelve months following surgery.
  • After removing your braces, we will reveal your brand new smile and we will give you a retainer to help maintain it for years to come.
