Surgical Orthodontics: Measured Solutions for Complex Jaw Correction

Surgical orthodontics, known as orthognathic surgery, is a specialized treatment reserved for severe skeletal and alignment discrepancies that cannot be resolved through orthodontics alone. This integrated process requires the collaborative mastery of our specialists and a trusted oral and maxillofacial surgeon. We approach orthognathic surgery with precision and thoughtful planning, ensuring the structural correction leads to a stable, reliable bite and jaw relationship.

We only recommend surgical intervention after a comprehensive and measured evaluation confirms that the patient's severe skeletal issues, jaw abnormalities, or malocclusions are beyond the scope of non-surgical treatment. Our priority is to secure optimal long-term oral health and function, and surgery is the most reliable method to achieve this in specific, complex adult and teen cases.

The Composed Treatment Process

Orthognathic surgery is a significant undertaking that requires a coordinated, composed approach. We ensure patients understand every measured stage of the journey:

  • Pre-Surgical Alignment The initial phase involves conventional orthodontic treatment (braces or aligners) to precisely align the teeth to fit the corrected jaw structure.
  • The Surgical Procedure The procedure is performed by an oral and maxillofacial surgeon in a hospital setting. The duration depends on the complexity of the correction.
  • Post-Surgical Healing and Refinement Following the required recovery period (typically around two weeks), the patient returns to our practice. We then utilize the remaining orthodontic phase to fine-tune the bite into its final, reliable position. The total orthodontic phase following surgery generally concludes within six to twelve months.
  • Retention Phase Once the appliances are removed, custom retention is essential. We provide a reliable process and retainers to secure the stability of the new jaw and bite relationship.

The staff is very knowledgeable! Everyone was very friendly, and kind. I was comfortable, and my visits were pleasant! Great place to chose for any orthodontist experience.

While this is a major treatment, the results are proven and structurally reliable. Surgical intervention offers significant, lasting benefits:

  • Structurally Sound Correction: Achieves a secure, functional bite that is unattainable with orthodontic appliances alone.
  • Improved Function: Significantly enhances the ability to chew, speak, and breathe.
  • Long-Term Security: Prevents the progression of severe skeletal issues and associated future discomfort.
  • Predictable Aesthetic Harmony: Corrects disproportionate facial structure, resulting in a composed and balanced appearance.

If you have concerns about a severe bite issue or jaw abnormality, schedule a measured initial assessment with our specialists. We will provide a thoughtful evaluation to determine the most reliable treatment process for you.

A patient’s initial consultation can help us determine if and what type of treatment is needed for their orthodontic issue. We will only recommend surgery if we believe it’s the only way to achieve optimal oral health.

If you have more questions about orthodontic surgery or would like to schedule an initial orthodontic assessment, book a free consultation with us today at Mattingly & Howell Orthodontics in Louisville.
